Recompile – Tour a Mainframe’s Haunting Ruins
Publisher Dear Villagers (ScourgeBringer, The Forgotten City) and developer Phigames today released a new featurette for their upcoming hacking adventure Recompile. The environmental trailer shows off the sprawling digital wasteland known as the Mainframe, accompanied by a haunting orchestral score.

In Recompile, players take on the role of a semi-sentient code trapped in a hostile supercomputer. Using combat, 3D platforming, and physics-based hacking mechanics, they must bypass a way to freedom – or else be deleted forever. The game will launch on PS5, Xbox Series XIS, and PC on Aug. 19, 2021.

The adventure is built around a branching narrative system unique to the Metroidvania genre. Unlike a typical Metroidvania, it uses a dynamic narrative system based on play style, meaning player decisions alter the world and can lead to any one of multiple endings.

The story explores everything from machine sentience to the nature of reality. The player is a rogue piece of semi-sentient code, trapped in The Mainframe – a sprawling digital wasteland dead-set on deleting trespassers.
