The Escapist is a well-rounded strategy game that sees the player as a prisoner inside a maximum security prison. The main objective is to devise strategies to outthink the prison guards, their security, and to figure out a way to escape as fast as possible.

The game uses a day and night cycle that involves mandatory routines that must be followed,  so the guards  will not become suspicious of your actions. There is a diverse crafting system that allows you to create (and even customize) hundreds of unique items that can be used during your escape.

Aside from mandatory routines (i.e. showing up for roll call, cleaning duties, etc.), the game has few restrictions on what can be done inside the prison. It is highly recommended that you complete the tutorial before actually playing the game (there’s a slight learning curve that can easily frustrate people playing for the first time).

The Escapist

The game mechanics and control scheme are reminiscent of the Zelda series. The Escapist is an action-based role-playing game that requires the player to be quick on their feet  (so to speak) and ultra savvy. It’s also important to be very careful when confronting other inmates;  they remember everything the player does and they will hold grudges (especially if you attempt to mug/steal from them).

If you cause too many problems in prison, the inmates will refuse to sell and trade with you (hindering your escape). Plus, inmates can also steal from the player (not to mention attack and/or mug them), so you must constantly be alert of your surroundings.

Basically, there is no honor among thieves. The twitch-style combat really makes for a fun time when you’re beating up the other inmates. It’s a simple system that anyone can pick up and play; it is also easy to master. The Escapist is a blast to play; it’s similar to a roguelike because it’s never the same game twice. It combines many different genres and does a good job of it in the process.

The Escapist is one of few games available today that focuses on the prison judicial system.  If you are looking for a role-playing game that takes you outside the box – and places you in a world where survival is crucial and escape necessary – then the Escapist is one game that will  definitely appeal to you.
