Tired of games that feel as if they move at a snail’s pace? Try Frogger Decades by Konami (iPhone $0.99). Frogger has been out for 30 years. You start in Frogger’s living room looking at his frog shaped TV. You tap an option on the screen and are given the choice of continuing an existing game, starting a new game, score, and settings. With score you have your choice of using Game Center or Open Feint.
With Game Center, you can see the leaderboards and your achievements. The leaderboards tell you your ranking in the game out of everyone else that is or has played Frogger Decades. The achievements will tell you what achievements you have accomplished and ones that you still need to get. These include Maybe Next Time… (restarting at the same checkpoint 5x in a row), Water Resistant (died from landing in water), and Kickin’ it Old School (used the D-Pad control scheme).
Open Feint allows you to view leaderboards, achievements, forums & chat, a fan club and who is playing. Open Feint allows you to find your friends, view all your feint enabled games, inbox, settings, and help. Game data will automatically be stored on the servers. Settings allow you to turn the music and sfx on and off as well as to choose whether to use your fingers or D-Pad controls to move Frogger.
Open Feint will automatically look for an existing account on your iPhone
When you hit start, you are given four options: Story Mode, Time Attack, Locked and Back. Story Mode and Time Attack are the same with the exception that Story Mode is more relaxed than Time Attack. Open Feint will allow you to share and compare with your friends from Facebook and Twitter.
As you play Frogger, you will need to move Frogger along the multiple levels while avoiding dangers such as crabs, snails, poisonous plants, and more.
Frogger’s friends are planning a 30th birthday party for him and they leave a note on his door with a map to his present. Doc Croc changes the map to include more locations to slow Frogger down so he can get there before Frogger.
To keep Frogger alive, he will need to eat flies and rest at red flags. The flags are also where you will restart from if you die. Frogger’s health can be tracked by looking at the bottom of the screen and watching the length of his tongue. If he runs out of health, Frogger will go to sleep and you will start from the last red flag. There is a guide that will appear on the bottom of your screen to show you how to do various things including moving forward, catching flies with your tongue, and jumping very high, among other things.
Once you finish a level you will be shown how many times you died, how many flies you caught, your time, and your score.
Frogger Decades was fun to play and reminded me of the original. Frogger Decades has you crossing rivers and land, road, and more. The variety of obstacles and backgrounds keeps the game play interesting and not boring.
I tried both using your fingers to move and the D-Pad option. I prefer the finger method, which felt more intuitive to me. At some points, Frogger Decades was very frustrating when trying to get somewhere, and either hitting block on screen or trying to get flies so I wouldn’t die wouldn’t always work. This resulted in me dieing and restarting from the last flag. Being able to start from the last flag and not from the beginning of the level took some of the frustration away. Time will fly by as you play.
