Defense Technica is a traditional tower defense game with unforgiving AI and challenging gameplay. You start each round with just enough cash to purchase the towers needed to defend your base. Deciding on which towers to use and where to place them is vital to your survival. As you kill the enemies that attack your base, they will drop money that can used to purchase additional towers. You can unlock stronger weapons for your arsenal as you progress through each stage.
At the beginning of the game, you are restricted to a Sub-Machine Gun and a Stabber tower. The former tower is a long-range weapon, while the latter is a close combat, melee-style tower. As you progress through the game, different towers such as flamethrowers, missiles and even mortars will unlock. These will help you combat the variety of enemies you will encounter. There are a total of eight different tower classes that can be transformed into 40 different weapons that can be used for combat.
The missions increase in difficulty the further you progress through the game. There is an option to choose between two difficulty settings at the start of each mission, but neither seem to have much affect since the difficultly still increases as you play.
One great feature is the ability to see the path your enemy is taking. Whether it involves a single wave or multiple waves of enemies, their paths are marked by a small red line that indicates which direction they’re traveling in. This feature helps the player plan their towers accordingly by placing them in the direction of the incoming enemy encounter. Having a good strategy is necessary for surviving the onslaught of enemies that constantly attack your base. Positioning your towers in the right locations is also important since it can mean the difference between victory and defeat. Plus, Defense Technica sports a staggering 22 stages to complete; this is no easy feat.
Some of the later stages will push your strategies and skills as a gamer to their limits. Don’t expect to complete each stage in a single play-through either, as some will take multiple attempts to complete. Even the most seasoned of tower defense gamers will find themselves being challenged.
The only feature that is missing from Defense Technica is online multiplayer. Tower defense games benefit from having an online component, especially co-op or pvp matches. I wouldn’t rule out a possible future update or even a DLC release that implements this feature. But as of right now, the only available online feature is the Leader board scoring system. At the very least, the player can compete at some level with other tower defense patrons.
Despite lacking online multiplayer, Defense Technica stands out among the other RTS-style games available today. If you are looking for a pure strategy-driven defense game that challenges your skills as a gamer, then look no further.
