Ever wish you could use your natural gas to get you going? Meet Houston, star of Tradewest Digital’s, “Tiny Toots”. Houston eats beans to try and escape from Professor Beanstock, who is trying to catch him via helicopter to return him to the Dino farm where he lives.
When the Professor is approaching , you will hear sirens and the screen will start to flash. You will see him hanging out of his helicopter with a net. Houston eats beans as he slides up and down the hills. To get him to go faster downhill, tap the screen with your finger, but be careful. Use your finger at the wrong time and you will slow Houston down.
Until you complete the first level, there is a tutorial in the shape of a finger that appears on the screen to show you how to play. If you touch the screen at the wrong time, you will slow Houston down to the point where he is barely moving. The more beans you eat, the faster you will go. If you eat a chili bean, you will get flames that come out of you butt that will make you move even faster. You can also start to fly over the hills.
You will see a “ghost” that shows you how you did in past games. You can beat your ghost by going faster and further than you did in past games. When you get caught by the doctor, you will see your games stats that include: score, level reached, perfect slides, beans eaten, chili beans eaten, distance, number of cloud breakers, and the longest disco.
You can reach disco mode by having 5 perfect slides. A spinning mirror ball drops down and you boogie your way through the game. If you have a slide that isn’t perfect, you go back to the regular mode. A cloud breaker is when you fly into the clouds. There is a small circle with a silhouette of Houston that fills up in the lower left corner called a “toot bag”. When it is full, you can press it, and get an extra “boost” of speed. This can be used to get away from the Professor when he gets near you or at any time you please.
If you click on the option button on the start menu, you will get several options: You can turn music, sound FX, and ghost mode on or off. You can also reset ghost or tutorial mode. By clicking on the extras button, it will open a screen with 3 shadow shapes with question marks. By clicking on achievements, it will show what needs to be done for the first and additional cups.
When a level is finished, you will see your level stats. These include the number of red and green beans eaten, what time the level was finished in, and your all time record.
Tiny Toots uses the Openfeint system to keep track of the multiple achievements you can get. These include Tiny Dancer (stay in Disco Time for 30 seconds), Slippery (6 Perfect Glides in a Row), Over Achiever (Make it to level 7), Bean Counter (Collect 300 Beans), Keep It Up! (No Rough Landings Before Level 3), Night Fever (Stay in Disco Time for 60 Seconds), and 1 of 4 cups depending on the number of achievements you have gotten, among others.
Tiny Toots is an incredibly fun game to play. I found myself not wanting to stop; it becomes almost instinctive once you figure out the timing. Until you do this, it presents quite the challenge. The backgrounds are colorful and visually appealing. The sounds add to the overall atmosphere. It becomes a challenge to stay in disco mode, but once you’re there, you can go as far and as fast as you can with a natural gas source.
