Review Score:

Divinity Original Sin 2 for PC is a mind-altering experience from start to finish. Most role-playing games take you to an alternate reality, away from civilization. Divinity Original Sin 2 does exactly that and more.

The game has an intoxicating atmosphere that is addictive. The turn-based combat system works perfectly, and fans will enjoy the tactical challenge it brings. There is also the open-ended gameplay, which allows the gamer to play Original Sin 2 any way they see fit. This means the player can be good, evil or neutral depending on the situation. Some conversations and situations can only be dealt with by using specific skills such as Outlaw and Soldier, to name just a few. The choices the player makes have a direct impact on the story. Due to this feature, the game offers hundreds of different outcomes.

Original Sin 2 has to be the most diverse and customizable Divinity in the series by far. There are multiple difficulty settings and hundreds of options for customizing your character. The player can literally spend days just creating their main character for the story. There are a total of 15 character classes; six origin classes; and eight custom origin classes as well. No matter what character class or origin you choose, it will not have any effect on the story itself. If an origin character is selected, there is an option to customize their abilities from their static stats. The difference here is that an origin character adds more dialogue to the story than the other characters do.

The game’s story is detailed and in-depth. The player can spend hours in one location, exploring and completing the available side quests, but you would never progress through the story; trust me I know. During this review, I logged in over 60+ hours in Fort Joy alone, which is a starter location. That’s not counting how far I progressed after I left that newbie zone.

The possibilities available to solve problems are almost endless. The player can either talk their way out of situations; use deadly force (i.e. fight); or rely on tactical means to overcome obstacles and situations. Every available character plays an important role in the story. If the player kills an origin character, their death will have an impact on the story. The amount of flexibility that is available to the player is remarkable.

Just about everything found inside the game world can be picked up, dragged, or moved to
a new location. The ability to pick up just about anything adds a quality of life to the game. The player can talk to almost every NPC they encounter, and they can also kill them. Killing an NPC will affect the player’s standing with teammates, other NPCs and the game world at large. Depending on how many evil deeds the player commits, their teammates may start to act differently. This can also change the course of the game.

Even though a morality system doesn’t exist in Divinity Original Sin 2, the game does a great job of noticing what the player has done along the way. Unfortunately, there is no way for the player to gauge how ‘evil’ their character has become. A morality system would be a nice addition to the series, but it’s not a necessity.

The environments are beautiful to say the very least. The attention to detail is simply mind-blowing, especially where combat is concerned. After a battle, blood will pool on the ground. Walking through these pools of blood will cause bloody foot impressions to appear on the ground.

Divinity Original Sin 2’s orchestrated soundtrack adds to the experience. Each track is composed with such elegance and grace, it will immediately draw you into the experience. It’s some of the best music ever heard in an RPG.

Divinity Original Sin 2 is the best game in the series. It incorporates everything that made the original game a hit, while adding new content that helps this release stand out on its own. Divinity Original Sin 2 comes highly recommended.
