Review Score:

We’re back, dood! And this time we have to find a missing pair of panties that belong to our master, Demon Lord Etna. We’re not sure what to do, dood, and this is where YOU come in. We need your help exploring the Netherworld for these missing undergarments, before Etna gets really mad at us.

Like the game before it (i.e. Prinny: So You Want to Be a Hero?), Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! is a 2.5D side-scrolling platformer that combines the fast action of games like Metal Slug, while intwining the tongue-in-cheek humor of the Disgaea series.

Gameplay involves traversing a landscape filled with hazards that range from dangerous jumps (i.e. nerve-wracking gaps between platforms) to a host of nasties (i.e. Eryngi, Gear Metal, Lucky Doll, etc.) that either run on foot or fly through the sky. The platforming itself is quite challenging, as the player fights their way through a variety of monsters, while navigating through a world filled with crates, magic carpets (which are suspended above the playfield), and certain locations in-level that serve as ‘spawn points’ for the game’s more challenging creatures.

Along the game progresses, the player must find checkpoints (which resemble skulls) and then ‘Hip Pound’ them to save their progress. When the in-game difficulty is considered, it’s important to use one of these checkpoints the moment one is found. Otherwise, the game will send the player back to the beginning of the level after dying.

Combat consists of the normal hack ‘n slash variety, as the player rapidly taps the Y button to attack with two short swords. Jumping into the air by pressing the B button — and then tapping Y — will result in a powerful aerial projectile that can demolish most enemies. While it’s not considered harmful, the player can ‘Hip Pound’ some enemies to place them in a short daze. This usually comes in handy when dealing with multiple adversaries.

Once the player completes a level, they are sent to an encampment where they can visit friendly NPCs such as Flonne, Shell and Prain, to name just a few. While in this ‘safe’ location, the player can  ‘Save’ their in-game progress; re-read the in-game tutorial; or select the next stage to play. The NPCs also have plenty to say, if the player chooses to interact with them.

Despite being released over 10 years ago, Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! doesn’t seem like it aged a day. The 2.5D graphics look incredible on the Nintendo Switch (especially in portable mode), and the action never seems to skip a beat, no matter how intense the game becomes. Just chalk it up to another fantastic Nintendo Switch port by NIS America.
