Marvelous Games, a division of Japanese publisher MarvelousAQL, known for acclaimed titles like No More Heroes, Half Minute Hero and Harvest Moon, has today unveiled Eyes Attack – a brilliant new iOS action game which will hypnotise you as soon as you look it in the eyes.
In Eyes Attack, players act as Hunter, a feisty blue fluffball defending the planet from waves of attacking aliens. However, conventional weapons don’t work against these one-eyed monsters – instead, players must chuck stones at these bouncing invaders, splitting them into smaller, more manageable opponents. These, too, need to be hit before the next wave appears – and figuring out the order in which each alien should be tackled provides much of the game’s challenge.
Quick reactions are required, too – players control the game entirely by tilting their device. Physics matters, as players must not only move to avoid aliens, but also to maintain the right momentum needed for their stones to hit their targets. With limited ammunition, it’s vital to get these space Cyclops the first time right between the, ah, eye.
The aliens come in many forms. The greenies are small and nimble and present little problem in the early stages. The blue guys are big and fast – and split into two when first hit. Don’t be fooled by the dotty blue ones – they are dangerous alone and terrifying in groups. The yellow ones can jump incredibly high. And as for the red ones… well, keep your wits and stones about you.
(We won’t mention the invisible slugs just yet, lest you’re scared right off.)
An additional tactical element comes into play with the inclusion of power-ups and hats, which players can bring into each level. Power-ups affect offensive capabilities, such as giving more starting ammo or providing power-ups such as innocent-sounding yet deceptively effective bouncy balls to the flat-out awesome Tesla helmet. Eyes Attack’s sense of humour is exemplified through its hat collection, where players can boost defensive stats with various headwear, ranging from the iconic Russian furry ushanka to pirate hats or the humble kitchen colander.
“Eyes Attack epitomises what we’re about at Marvelous,” says Harry Holmwood, CEO, MAQL Europe.
“It’s quirky, it’s different – and it’s a game we fell in love with when Alexander first approached us to help him polish and launch the game.”
