Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is a hybrid first-person shooter that incorporates the right blend of action and strategy; it plays different than your average FPS.
Carrier Command: Gaea Mission has an offline story mode that can easily last about forty hours. Strategy mode automatically places you into a random game against other carrier commanders in an all-out war. You start out with a fully stocked carrier ready for battle.
The single-player campaign is the bulk of the game and it’s where you will have most of your gaming experience. You play Lieutenant Myrik who crash lands on Vulcan. The game starts out as a first-person shooter until you secure the main command hub on the island. Here is where you acquire your first vehicle, the Walrus, for your carrier.
As you progress through the single-player campaign, you will obtain more vehicles that can be used in battle. The more locations you conquer, the more equipment and vehicles you will acquire. Every vehicle can be upgraded with stronger weapons and mods to make them more useful.
Once you’re aboard the carrier, you can access the tactical map section to give orders to the carrier command, upgrade and equip your units with new gear, and plot new courses to different locations. The best thing about traveling via the carrier command is the time warp feature. Once you have selected a location, you can use the time warp feature to speed up time to reach your desired location faster.
The combat system in Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is amazing. You can control multiple units similar to a standard RTS. This is done by undocking multiple units from the carrier and delivering orders via the Radial menu. You can instruct your units to assist you, dock, or defend. This comes in handy when you’re battling multiple enemies at once.
Each unit can be used in either a 3rd-person or first-person camera view. Unlike standard strategy games, Carrier Command really gets you involved in the action. You can switch between your units whether they’re on or off the carrier. This makes combat fast and not so much a chore like in some games. You can also use the tactical map to give orders, but this can also be done seamlessly during combat.
Other features include: restocking ammunition, repairing units and gathering more fuel. All this can be done without traveling back to your carrier; you can visit depots which are located in certain locations. Not all islands have resource depots, but you can take advantage of the ones that are available.
The graphics in Carrier Command: Gaea Mission are gorgeous. The locations you visit have beautiful water physics that splash when you drive vehicles through rivers. The effects are amazingly realistic and take advantage of the Xbox 360. Everything about the game feels epic. The intense combat and the awe-inspiring music really gets your blood pumping.
Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is a must-have for any first-person shooter or strategy game fan. It takes the best of both genres and creates an engaging world of war. Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is so much fun, you almost forget that it originated on the old Commodore Amiga computer.
