Team 17’s beloved franchise has returned with more maps and worm-based warfare. Much like the previous games, Worms Revolution places the player in control of a worm army with various combat skills. Worms is a game of strategy that requires precision and calculated decisions in order to survive. Designed with a new 3D engine that is heavily modified for more dynamic physics, the gameplay actually outshines previous installments in the series.

Worms Revolution contains a story campaign complete with a tutorial for those who might be new to the series. The tutorial is amusing and very entertaining. It teaches you the ropes and explains the basics on how to control your army of worms.

There are fifty-two single-player missions in the offline campaign mode. This includes thirty-two missions and twenty puzzle challenges to beat. There is also a level editor so players can design their own missions/maps. The maps contain a tremendous amount of detail and they’re large; there is plenty of space to wage war against the opposing worm faction.

You can use just about every section of the map to battle your foes. The game includes locations such as beaches, sewers, farmyards and spooky. The maps also include animated backgrounds where rats, seagulls, and crabs go about their business. These little touches add to the game’s overall appeal and atmosphere.

Just about everything in Worms Revolution can be destroyed (this includes the landscape and even inanimate objects that block your way). These objects (i.e. rocks, etc.) can be used to your advantage during combat. Some objects, once they are destroyed, can either release poison, fire, or even water that can drown worms.

With a staggering amount of weapons at your disposal, choosing what to attack with first can be a daunting task. Should you throw a grenade or use the rocket launcher? You can never have too many weapons, but there are times when the decision to choose feels a bit overwhelming. The game includes close combat, mid range, and long range weapons.

Aside from weapons, there are gadgets like jet packs to help you reach higher elevations. The selection also includes torches and drills for tunneling. As you play Worms Revolution, you can unlock additional gadgets and weapons to help your team of worms succeed.

The famous turn-based combat system from previous installments is present in Worms Revolution. Like all turn-based games, you can only move one worm at a time.  You are given a limited amount of time to move your worm before the timer expires. If you happen to get attacked (or even hurt by falling off a cliff) before the timer expires, your turn will end. There is a gadget that can be used to swap between worms, but this can only be done if you possess the gadget.

After your turn ends, the NPC (or player) opponent will have its turn. The match will continue until one side loses all its worms or the timer expires. Each match can take upwards of thirty minutes to complete (by default), but it depends on the rules chosen for battle.

It’s fun to build your team of worms. You can choose between four different character classes:  Soldier, Scout, Heavy and Scientist. Each character class has its own strengthens and weaknesses. For example: the scout worm can move faster than the other worms, but its health limitations make it weaker and more susceptible to damage.

While playing, you earn a form of currency that allows you to buy different worm classes and the ability to customize the way your worm army looks. You can purchase new costumes and add accessories like trinkets. Your worm army is completely customizable, so you better get busy playing. You’ll need a lot of currency to afford all the available features.

The game starts you off with a preset team of four worm soldiers. As a class, soldiers are well balanced compared to the other classes. They’re also a great choice for beginners. But once you have played long enough, you can graduate to the other classes.  Once you make a new group of worms and then save, you can use your modified team whenever you want.

Worms Revolution has an offline single-player campaign and three online multiplayer modes: Deathmatch, Forts and Classic. So when you finish the single-player campaign, you can take the battle online to either challenge your friends or random opponents.

When playing online, you can choose between ranked battles and player battles. Ranked battles add to your online stats (i.e. wins, loses, etc.), while player battles do not penalize your stats if you happen to lose a match.

Worms Revolution has improved 2.5D visuals bathed in brilliant color. If you prefer the classic look of the previous games, you can play the game in Classic Mode. Team 17 has done a great job of catering to its fans.

Gamers will not be disappointed by Team 17’s latest offering. In fact, it’s one of the best turn-based strategy games available today. Play it now if you haven’t already.
