Have you ever fantasized about being a hero? Do you enjoy wearing tight spandex in public? Well, if you answered yes to any of the following questions, then you qualify for a position in Gotham City Impostors; they’re always looking for a few good men and women.
Gotham City Impostors is a club of sorts for wannabe villains and super heroes alike. It’s very simple really; you’re either a hero or a villain. You have your choice of Bats, who fashion themselves after Batman who spends his time fighting crime, or you can fall in with the Jokers who are the villains.
But unlike their counterparts, both sides don’t have all the fancy gadgets/gear as the actual heroes or villains do; they have to compromise here and there. The Bats have a motto , ‘Why stop crime, when you can kill crime.’ As you can tell, there are no jail sentences for the villains.
Gotham City Impostors is a fast-paced, first-person shooter that pits you against other players in a non-stop combat scenario. When the first round starts, there is nowhere to hide and no one is safe from the zany havoc that unfolds.
There are multiple game modes to choose from, and they range from a capture the flag type to a defend-style mode. For example: Fumigation and Psych Warfare are two completely different gameplay modes. Fumigation is a defend-type game mode where you must hold three Fumigation machines while the other side tries to steal them back from you.
The team that holds them the longest will win the game. At the lower left-hand side of the screen on the GUI, you will notice a percentage counter displaying which team is winning. The team to reach one hundred percent is the team that will win the match. The funny graphics and one-liners really add to the levity and atmosphere of Gotham City Impostors. Granted, it wasn’t really meant to be taken seriously in the first place, but still — it’s a very nice touch.
Gotham City Impostors has five different licensed maps to raise chaos on while playing either online or offline. The role-playing element in Gotham City Impostors is a nice feature. You earn costume coins, experience points, talent points, and skill points. These feats can be gained by simply playing the game and leveling up.
The costume coins are used for upgrading the appearance of your Gotham City Impostors’ avatar. You can change every single feature of your avatar, including the way it looks. This means less gamers will have the same cookie-cutter avatar. I find this feature very intriguing. You can even change the pitch of your avatar’s voice; talk about thinking outside the box.
You can’t help but laugh at all the crazy stuff that takes place during combat. There’s chaos everywhere; people flying overhead with makeshift gliders and on roller skates shooting shotguns. It resembles something straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon. The graphics are done in the traditional DC comic book style.
The weapons system is much like the avatar system in that it’s fully customizable. There are numerous mods that can be added to your weapon to improve its overall performance. There are multiple weapons to choose from: rifles, assault rifles, small arms, heavy rocket launchers, and sniper rifles. And this doesn’t include the talents and extra equipment you can have.
Customizing your avatar’s load out can be a unique experience. You can select from any of the weapons you unlock, and they can be added to either the primary or secondary weapon slot. It’s not uncommon to spend hours figuring out which items are best for each map. I cannot tell you the hours I spent customizing everything until it was perfect.
The only thing that is missing from the experience are the ‘Bam’ and ‘Wham’ word balloons while you’re hitting something with a hatchet.
There are five different maps; these maps are available during offline and online play. Gotham City Impostors offers a great online experience, but it falls short during the single-player game. Aside from learning the maps during single-player, there really isn’t much use for it.
Gotham City Impostors is a fun first-person shooter with the likeness of a comic book. With the right amount of support (i.e. DLC that includes new avatar items and extra maps), I can see Gotham City Impostors hanging in there.
