Digital Leisure in 2011 – Beyond Dragon’s Lair & Space Ace

When asked about Digital Leisure’s 2011 line-up, Paul Gold could only say, “We hope to make some announcements in the coming weeks as we finalize our 2011 releases.”

If we consider the current trend of Laser Disc games already released on Playstation 3, Dragon’s Lair II: Timewarp seems like the next logical choice. But this doesn’t explain the other projects that Paul Gold hinted at. In a recent Q&A that PixelPerfectGaming conducted with Paul, it was mentioned that David Foster (Digital Leisure’s president) was once at the helm of a company named Readysoft. For people not old enough to remember, Readysoft was responsible for bringing Dragon’s Lair, Space Ace and Dragon’s Lair II: Time Warp to home computers during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.

Readysoft was also responsible for developing the critically acclaimed Brain Dead 13 and releasing it on multiple console systems (including the ill-fated Atari Jaguar and its CD-ROM add-on). Brain Dead 13 was an original game that used the same game mechanics as Dragon’s Lair. Since Digital Leisure has access to Readysoft’s Intellectual Properties, could we see Brain Dead 13 for Playstation 3 later this year?

Banjo the Woodpile Cat is another possibility. Developed by Don Bluth and released on iPhone, Banjo is very similar to Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace. However, the player must tap on flashing objects instead of inputing simple directions. Something like this could be re-programmed for a console system. In fact, it might not be too difficult to assign buttons on a joypad to simulate ‘screen taps’ during gameplay.

According to Paul Gold, fans have been ‘very receptive to the release of Space Ace’ and that ‘retro gaming fans [were] really excited for the launch’. The chances are good that similar games will appear in Digital Leisure’s line-up, especially when you consider the recent success of both Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace on Playstation 3.

One thing is for certain; PixelPerfectGaming.com will be there to report on the details when the announcement is made.
