Dive Medes Island (Review) Nintendo Wii

Ever want to explore underwater but can’t swim?  Dive Medes Islands by Cosmonaunt Games is your answer.  Jump in feet first.  You are looking for the sunken temple of Martin 1.  You start in Catalina, Spain and move around the area to different locations. You also have the first log entry.

You are searching for the Tomb of Martin 1 “The Human” and its secret treasure. By using the compass, you can locate supplies such as oxygen and arrows, treasures such as money and statues, as well as the main treasure.

When a level is completed, you can use your money to upgrade your equipment such as a the wetsuit that allows you to dive deeper, increase the amount of oxygen and number of arrows you can carry, upgrade to fins that allow you to swim faster, among other items.

The levels are challenging as you navigate your way through caves trying to avoid the eels, lion-fish, sharks and other moving obstacles, as well as finding scuba cylinders and boxes of arrows to replenish your dwindling supply. Being hit by a dangerous fish or object will deplete your air supply faster.

Unless you upgrade the number of arrows you can carry, you are limited to 5.  Use them wisely against the dangers of the deep. Luckily you have unlimited lives.

The controls are easy to use.  Press the B button to swim, double-press to give yourself an extra boost of speed, but be aware, you will use more oxygen.  Point the curser to where you want to swim.

To fire an arrow, point to where you want to shoot and press the A button.  If  you see what looks like a beach ball, swim to it and release it;  this will save your progress, so if you die, you  can start from here.  If you do not complete a level, your saves will be lost.

You can map your progress by pressing right on the “+” at the top of the Wiimote.  Pressing left will turn on your torch.  If you go too deep, an alarm will sound. You can track your depth by looking at the left side of the screen along with your air supply, and your compass.

I tried to game on easy and normal.  For me, Normal was easier than Easy. Being a certified SCUBA diver, I found  this game very enjoyable.  It has some of the same limitations of real diving, such as limited air supply, you only have what you can carry, depth limitations, and the need to watch out for sea life.

Dive Medes Island is a truly enjoyable experience that anyone will enjoy, diver or not.  The graphics are very detailed allowing you to enjoy the scenery and feel as if you really are diving and searching for lost artifacts.
