Good Evening Gamers,
The intensity was high at the Jacob K. Javits Center today as the 2009 World Cyber Games US National Final got underway.
Filled with music and player introductions, the Opening Ceremonies were emceed by the host of the hit SyFy reality television series Joel Gourdin and renowned shoutcaster and WCG Ultimate Gamer contestant sWooZie. Highlighting the ceremonies were speeches from WCG CEO Hyoung -Seok Kim and Samsung North America Vice President Peggy Ahn along with appearances by many of the stars of the WCG Ultimate Gamer – including champion Marc ‘applesauce’ Smith and fan favorites Robert ‘Prod1gy X’ Paz and Chelsea ‘Delicate (<3)’ Alek-Finkleman. The ceremonies were capped by the traditional reciting of the Fair Play Oath, which signals the beginning of the three day competition.
Today’s competition kicked-off with its fair share of upsets as reigning Guitar Hero USA Champion Thomas ‘witwix’ Burke was beaten by Greg ‘schmegery’ Gunter in the second round. Another shake-up took place in StarCraft as top contender and WCG Ultimate Gamer Geoff Robinson lost his first match of StarCraft during group play. Both can still make the finals, and though these top gamers may be down there is two more days of gaming to prove that they are not out!
