Paper Wars: Cannon Fodder (Review) Playstation 3/ PSP

Labeled as the ‘worst game ever’ by its developer, Paper Wars is an oddball PSN Mini game with a unique appeal. As a soldier who commandeers a paper tank , you must defend your post from an endless army of paper soldiers.

The concept is straight-forward: while using the left analog stick, you must aim your tank’s crosshairs over a brigade of soldiers, hold down the X button to build your fire gauge, and then release the button to fire a shell. The paper ammo will soar across the screen, causing enormous hand-drawn paper explosions.

The objective is to kill a certain number of soldiers per stage. The difficulty increases as you progress; soldiers will march slowly across the battlefield at first, but their advancement increases in speed during later levels.

Additionally, small icons will appear randomly on the playfield to increase your firepower. These icons  – which range from air strikes to a clock that slows down time – can be activated by highlighting one with your crosshairs and pressing Square button. This is Paper Wars in a nutshell. While it’s entertaining as a short diversion, it certainly will not captivate for long periods of time.

It is worth mentioning that your tank upgrades with your rank. While this seems to have little impact on the actual game, it does add some variety to the repetitive gameplay.

The graphics resemble torn sheets of paper from a notebook. They’re nothing special, but at the same time they have a certain appeal. There’s something about paper soldiers and tanks that resonates with childhood memories.

While it’s not the ‘worst’ game ever produced, Paper Wars is an acquired taste that may not appeal to every gamer. However, if you’re looking for a short diversion, Paper Wars will deliver just enough to keep you busy.

The music is comical to say the very least. The out of tune instruments really set the tone for this quirky title.
