Playstation 3 Bug Turns Out To Be Leap Year Error In Hardware

The bug that started affecting ‘fat’ Playstation 3 units on February 28th, 2010 turned out to be an error in the Playstation 3’s internal clock system. According to an official statement made by Sony this morning, the Playstation hardware considered the month of February a Leap year and became confused when there were only 28 days in that month. This resulted in the corruption of data and the dreaded 8001050F error that most early adopters experienced.

As of this writing, the error has resolved itself after the Playstation’s internal clock resolved the two missing days from the month of February.

No official fix has been released by Sony to remedy this problem. Hopefully this problem will not occur again in February 2011.
