The OLED Nintendo Switch was just Announced; Will You Upgrade?

The rumored Nintendo Switch Pro (a name adopted by those involved in the rumor mill surrounding this Switch console upgrade) has finally been announced by Nintendo, and the console’s name doesn’t have the word(s) ‘Super’ or ‘Pro’ anywhere in its title. Dubbed the OLED Nintendo Switch, this slight refresh of Nintendo’s console/portable has been confirmed to have an OLED screen that is 7.0 inches with a screen resolution of 1280×720 undocked. When placed in the new docking station, the OLED Nintendo Switch will still only output 1080p via a modern television.

As expected, the OLED Switch is compatible with previously released Nintendo Switch games and memory cards. In addition, Nintendo announced some technical details that raised a few eyebrows. For starters, the OLED Switch is expected to ship with 64gigs of internal storage. The internal speaker system is promised to output better sound too. Unfortunately, the system’s CPU is still the same NVIDA Custom Tegra processor found in the original Nintendo Switch, meaning this console is not the mid–generation refresh that rumors would have people believe.

With that aside, additional tech announcements involving the OLED Switch were made, and they include the following: a Accelerometer, gyroscope, and brightness sensor; 9 hours of battery life (which will be determined by the type of game being played); and a new battery with approximately 3 hours of ‘charge’ time when the console is in ‘Sleep Mode’.

As for the new Docking Station that accompanies the OLED Switch: it will include an HDMI connector; 2X USB ports that are USB 2.0 compatible; a Wired LAN port; and an AC adapter port.

With that said, are you excited for the new OLED Nintendo Switch, even though it’s not the ‘Pro’ console we were expecting? The OLED Nintendo Switch is slated for an October 3rd release and will retail for $349.99USD. Contact your local video game retailer today for pre-order availability.
