Ever wanted to be a secret super hero? Steve Jackson’s Appointment with F.E.A.R. By Tin Man Games with the assistance of Screen Australia makes it possible. Appointment with F.E.A.R. is a Fighting Fantasy game book turned interactive comic that has many possible endings that make both success or failure a possibility.

Your birth was looked upon with both eagerness and trepidation as your parents agreed to unusual radiation treatments before your birth. As a child, you are protected from further experiments. As you grew older, the research was forgotten. During your teen years, your powers  began to show themselves.

To create your character, you get to choose multiple things: Your gender (i.e. male or female) and one of the following powers: ‘ I am super clever and have invented a gadget for every situation’; ‘I have super strength and can fly’; ‘ I can fire Energy blasts from my hands’; and ‘I can move objects with my brain and read people’s minds’. ‘You can also customize how you look, including your colors and even your name.

You start your day inside your apartment where your Radio Transmission Descriptor crackles to life with an important message – “F.E.A.R. Meeting preparations begin in Titan City today. All high-level agents are to attend. Our scheme for world domination cannot fail. Utoshski out.” You need to stop the F.E.A.R. Meeting and only have 3 days to do so. You gain LUCK points for doing various things in the game. These can be used to up your chances of getting rare F.E.A.R. Cards. These cards are received when you defeat an enemy; there are 72 cards in total.

Your Crimewatch will tell you what is happening in the city and will give you clues to help you figure out where the meeting is located. You must make decisions from choices that pop up on screen. These will affect how the game plays if you gain or lose points. You can gain or lose HERO, SKILL, and STAMINA points.

When you battle enemies, you can choose which action to take and how much damage it will do; Easy (2 pt), Medium (4 pt), and Hard (6 pt). The number of points left for both of you is always displayed. If you lose the battle, the game is over and you can start from a previous point.

Gameplay is easy and intuitive. You create your character and name yourself, which while somewhat limited, is still fun. You are a hidden superhero who must hide behind the facade of the cliché newspaper reporter.

Your boss doesn’t know about it and keeps riding you about your work and attendance even going so far as to suspend you for a day with no pay. (You even win an achievement for this as well: 3 Day Weekend Get suspended from work for a day). There are several achievements you can earn including: Visiting Wisneyland (The Happiest Place) and “Enjoy” Lloyd Web Andrews latest Musical (Cultured Hero).

You can check your status by clicking the 3 dots in the upper left hand corner; they will show your – STAMINA; SKILLS; LUCK; HERO POINTS; and HERO POINTS LOST. It will also bring up the menu where you can check your checkpoints, clues, Titan City Map, and Extras. Under Extras, you can view your F.E.A.R. Cards (there are 72), Achievements (30), Credits, Main Menu, and Back to the Story. You can view Cards and Achievements from all the games that you have played.

Appointment with F.E.A.R. will not disappoint any fan of the Fighting Fantasy game book genre, as it has almost infinite gameplay where you can choose 4 different powers and different reactions to each situation. Go ahead and pick up your phone and phase your FEAR of failing Titan City; I dare you. You won’t be disappointed
