Dungeon of the Endless (Preview) PC

Dungeon of the Endless is a roguelike game that incorporates turn-based combat and traditional puzzle solving. After crash landing at an unknown location, you and your crew members must protect your ship’s generator while exploring an ‘endless’ dungeon.

While most roguelike games have you crawling dungeons by yourself, Dungeon of the Endless includes additional survivors that will join your party along the way. With that said, you can also expand your party by reactivating any non-functional androids left inside the dungeon. Plus, these androids can easily replace any survivors that happen to die during the course of each level.

Like most traditional roguelike games, Dungeon of the Endless offers a comprehensive selection of gear and weapons for the player to discover. While each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses, it’s important to search for gear that contains the best stats possible. Since the game randomly generates each floor, there are times when a shopkeeper will spawn with rare items and weaponry useful to your adventure. Never overlook this NPC when it appears; it could contain an item you desperately need for your adventure.

The game also includes a very unique crafting system that is based on three resource factors – Industry, Science and Food. As you traverse through each of the randomly generated rooms, you will discover power pads located in the middle of the room . These metallic pads allow the player to power additional rooms with the energy that is generated by the power crystal inside your spaceship’s engine. As long as you open the adjacent door in the room the Power Pads occupy,  you will be able to transmit power from one room to another. There are some rooms that are so far away from the power grid, it’s impossible to transmit power to them.

These Power Pads allow you to place generators that will increase your resources in both industry and food to help sustain your survivors.  Everything you craft from the generators will cost you resources to build. These resources can be either generated by  placing machinery inside the dungeon or by finding material inside chests.

There are no time restrictions on how long you can stay inside each dungeon level, so you can stay until you have gathered enough resources and leveled up your characters. Taking this approach is actually quite smart since the succeeding dungeon levels only increase in difficult.

The biggest challenge is moving your power crystal from one dungeon level to another. As you move the crystal, wave after wave of creatures appear out of nowhere to stop you. Having the dungeon completely mapped out at this point is vital to your survival, especially during this crucial transition. Otherwise, you can get lost inside the dungeon very easily.

Despite being in the early stages of alpha, Dungeon of the Endless feels like a polished retail release despite being a Steam Early Access title. Since this is the case, gamers still sitting on the fence about purchasing Early Access for this title should take the plunge now. Once the game goes retail, the current asking price of $9.79 will more than likely increase.
