Review Score:

Memoria is an old-school point-and-click adventure that is similar to classic adventure games such as Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion. The game is very straightforward, and like all point-and-click games, it requires good puzzle solving skills.

You play as two characters who are not directly connected, but are involved in stories separated by five hundred years. The game switches between characters as you complete segments from the story. For example: if you start by playing as Princess Sadja, the game will eventually switch to Geron.

Some puzzles will stump you for hours. It’s not uncommon to investigate the same location until you find the ‘answer‘ to the puzzle you’re trying to solve. While difficult, the puzzles are gratifying and rewarding. You’ll find yourself trying to escape a stone tomb; reading the thoughts of villagers; getting revenge on an ally; and exploring a large forest maze.

The game also requires the player to use magic to solve some of the puzzles. Princess Sadja, for example, can use her magic powers to manipulate the minds of characters by making them see items in the scenery. It’s scenarios like the one described that make Memoria so engaging. The puzzles in Memoria are not always cut and dry; they require extensive thinking and a lot of patience.

Memoria’s inventory system eliminates the inventory clutter seen in previous adventure games, as only a few items are present in your inventory at any given time. Since the game gives the player hints, there is no need to experiment with items from your inventory. This mechanic makes the game less frustrating for newcomers.

The game also lessens the burden of adventuring by incorporating features to help the player. By pressing the spacebar, every single point of interaction is revealed. There‘s even the occasional ‘assist’ that helps in combining an item with a puzzle, making it easier to solve certain puzzles.

Memoria is a modern take on the point-and-click adventure genre. Its eye-popping 2D graphics, professional narration and character development are some of the best ever seen in the genre. Plus, it challenges the player even though it offers assistance throughout the game.

Daedalic Entertainment is well-known for their point-and-click adventures; and Memoria is another example of their ability to produce high-quality games. Just like their previous releases, Daedalic delivers a fantastic experience that will keep you glued to your screen until the very end.
