Gas Guzzlers is a cross between Twisted Metal and The Need for Speed. We have seen games like this before, but Gas Guzzlers is different. It’s not your standard run-of-the-mill arena battle game. It takes racing to the next level with customizable vehicles and gorgeous courses to race on.
There were only two vehicles and two courses available in the preview build. The vehicles that were available had one customizable option each (technically bringing the available number of cars to four).
Unlike previous battle racing games, Gas Guzzlers places you on a standard race track with a start and finish line. Instead of being the last one standing like in some games, you’re fighting for top position to finish the race first, but with the ability to reign hell down on your opponents.
While racing, power ups like nitro, extra ammo and shields can be picked up to replenish your weapons and improve your vehicle. Driving high-octane cars at excessive speeds while bombarding your opponents with a hail of machine gun fire makes for a fun time indeed.
The music present in the preview build was remarkably done; some of it reminded me of bands like Arch Enemy and Morbid Angel – famed Deathmetal bands from back in the day.
The graphics are amazing and pleasing to the eyes. The environments are expansive; you can drive off the track and over hills in the terrain. This adds a non-linear feel to the gameplay.
This is a refreshing take on the genre; it shows a lot of promise for racing games as they evolve beyond their current state.
Gas Guzzlers showed a lot of promise during the preview evaluation. Developer Gamepires should really consider launching Gas Guzzlers on Xbox Live and Playstation Network; console gamers everywhere would enjoy its fresh approach. If the preview build is any indication, Gas Guzzlers is going to make a big splash in the PC community once it finally arrives on Steam.
