Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! (Review) PSP

Welcome to Dawn of Operation Panties, D00D! If you are familiar with the first game – Prinny: Can I really be the hero? – you already know what to expect from the sequel.  For gamers not familiar with Prinny, you’re in for an adventure that you will not forget.

Prinny 2 is a side-scrolling adventure that is a cross between Metal Slug, Disgaea, and NIS America’s newest title ZHP. It’s a non-stop, action packed game that feels like a role-playing game with the same humor found in the Disgaea series.

The game begins when Demon Lord Etna loses her panties. As you might imagine, it’s up to you to find this rare item. Enta orders you to retrieve her panties, so you are donned with a red scarf and sent on your way. Worse yet, Demon Lord Entra has given you ten hours before every Prinny pays for the mishaps.

During your adventure, you have the ability to communicate with demons and other Prinnies. This is where the role-playing aspect of the game comes in. Since the game has a lot of spoken and written dialog (and not to mention plenty of cut scenes), that classic NISA RPG feel is retained despite the platform action. Plus, you can choose which stage to tackle first.

Whenever you complete a stage the clock will countdown by an hour, giving a feeling of urgency. Fear not; you are given 1,000 lives (i.e. basically every Prinny there is) with three different difficulty settings to choose from: easy, normal and hard. Each stage ends with a boss fight and a rare item drop to collect for defeating your adversary. This will not be easy because completing a stage – let alone a boss fight – will take countless tries before the patterns are figured out.

While it’s a pretty common feature in most platformers, Prinny 2’s stages have checkpoints that will save your location if you happen to die. Even though your high score resets after dying, it is a small price to pay not to start at the beginning of a level.

As you make your way through each stage, there are various donuts, shortcakes and other deserts to collect that will add to your score. On top of collecting varies goodies, there are endless waves of nasties to kill like the Lucky Doll, Eryngi and Gear Metal.

Prinny 2 is a great game even though it isn’t that much different than its predecessor. The creature AI can be frustrating at times since enemies will sometimes appear out of nowhere, but it’s forgivable all things considered.

The music in Prinny 2 is full of catchy, up beat tunes that really add to the game’s appeal (which is exactly what we have come to expect from NIS America). In fact, fans of the Disgaea series will appreciate the similarity in the music.

Prinny 2 offers hours of enjoyment, plenty of laughs, and witty dialog. If you enjoyed the previous Prinny, you will definitely enjoy this one.

Prinny 2 is now available for $29.99.

Review Score
Beautiful 2D sprites and colorful backgrounds bring Prinny 2 to life.
The music is the same high quality associated with all NIS America releases.
The AI can be a bit cheap, but otherwise it's addictive and challenging.
Fans of the first Prinny game will enjoy this sequel.
