Chronos Twins DX (Review) Nintendo Wii

Chronos Twins DX is a unique experience that utilizes a two-screen system. As time-traveling hero Nec, you must walk the thin veil between the past and future simultaneously. This system has you controlling two versions of yourself while attacking enemies, jumping on platforms, solving puzzles, and challenging bosses at the end of each level. As difficult as this may sound, CT DX’s controls are easy to understand, and you will find yourself understanding the system in minutes.

It will take practice to keep track of both screens during the first few levels. Nec’s future self will move along at the same pace as his past self, but the on-screen environments will vary slightly. The past scenario may have areas that seem inaccessible (wide chasms with no platforms to help cross) but the future scenario at the top of the screen will have them. It’s all right to be fearful of your past self plummeting to his death if you attempt to jump on the platforms in the future scenario, but this doesn’t actually happen. Invisible flashes will appear underneath Nec’s past self indicating that he is being supported by the future scenario. It sounds confusing and a bit overwhelming to grasp at first.

Puzzles will require concentration when you first encounter them. In some areas, platforms will lead upward into a level. Half of the platforms will appear in the future scenario while others will appear in the past. This can be challenging, if not a bit confusing, at times. Once you’ve learned how to deal with this twist in gameplay, though, you’ll find yourself enjoying the experience.

Graphically, CT DX is a beautiful assortment of 2D visuals. Everything from Nec to his adversaries come to life in vibrant, vivd colors, and the backgrounds are just as beautiful. In fact, the graphics have a very classic feel to them. Even the animation is spot-on for both Nec and his enemies. The audio is your standard fare for a side-scroller with grunts, loud explosions, and laser fire.

Developer Enjoyup did a fantastic job with Chronos Twins DX for Nintendo Wii. It’s a rich experience that reinvents the 2D platformer with a very unique game play system. It can take some time getting used to but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
