Jane Jenson, famous adventure title creator (she created Gabriel Knight for instance and also worked on a King’s Quest title while at Sierra), is re-entering the field with Gray Matter. Recently, Robert Holmes, famed adventure game music veteran, has signed on to compose the soundtrack for Gray Matter.
Robert Holmes will not be doing the full soundtrack though he has done several of the tracks. Other music tracks are supplied by an independent band, The Scarlet Furies (a band created by Robert Holmes). The music and sound effects are being handled by Hamburg/Germany’s Periscope Studios. Periscope Studios is a younger company but they are veterans of gaming music, having worked on many prior game releases.
Gray Matter is Jane Jenson’s first full adventure title since she did Gabriel Knight 3 and will stick closely to what makes her games unique- gruesome incidents with supernatural events mixed in. Adventure gamers, here comes your game.
Following, for a little while at least, the actions of neurobiologist Dr. David Styles, Gray Matter gives some insight in his life after losing a wife in a car accident. Dr. Styles is a reclusive person, living in his English mansion, effectionately named, Dread Hill House.
As these things sometimes go, there is always someone that just can’t leave a person like Dr. Styles alone, in Gray Matter, that is Samantha Everett. Samantha happens to be in the right place at the right time as Dr. Styles is looking for an assistant and Samantha fits the bill nicely. Samantha being a nieve American that is travelling Europe is down on her luck and needs money so she takes up the position. Dr. Styles gives Samantha her first assignment, find six volunteers for a new experiment that will be carried out at Oxford University.
Starting out fine, the experiment quickly takes a turn for the worse and all kinds of weird stuff starts to happen, for one, Dr. Styles’ deceased wife visits him. Just what is going on in Dread Hill House?
Gamers are given control of Samantha and Dr. Styles and must fix what has been wronged. Are you up to the challenge?
