Hacker Attack on Sony Aided by Employees?

According to The Verge and Yahoo, the hackers responsible for crippling Sony’s computer systems yesterday say that they are working for ‘equality’ in the company.

The statement also suggests that Sony employees were involved in the attack against the electronic giant, stating that, ‘We want equality. Sony doesn’t. It’s an upward battle.’ The hackers’ intent still remains unclear, but yesterday’s attack was used to specifically call out Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton by calling him a ‘criminal’ in a tweet.

The hackers are claiming to already possess sensitive internal data from Sony. A hacker by the name of ‘lena’ made the hacking group’s methods public, but with vague details that said, “Sony doesn’t lock their doors, physically, so we worked with other staff with similar interests to get in,” lena wrote. “Im sorry I can’t say more, safety for our group is important.’

While her statement was ambiguous, lena makes subtle hints that internal help from the company was used to instigate the cyber attack.

When Sony employees went to work yesterday, they were greeted by an image of a glowing red skeleton on their computers. The image contained a list of demands and instructions, along with the message – ‘Hacked by #GOP’. According to the image, Sony was already aware of the group’s demands and its threats to release Sony’s secrets and top secrets to the public, if they did not comply by last night.

Based on the latest by Deadline reports, Sony’s computer systems remain down across the globe.
