Marvel vs Capcom 3 – Fans are disappointed by first impressions

Fans of Marvel vs Capcom 2 are scratching their heads at Capcom’s decision to reinvent the franchise. What also baffles gamers is the new comic-style visuals that look dark and muddy compared to MvC2.

Marvel has regained its popularity since the release of MvC2. During those days, comic book sales were flat, Marvel was struggling financially, and the future of the comic book was uncertain. In today’s market, Marvel has seen a spike in both printed and video sales, so it’s no wonder then that Marvel’s current involvement in the development of MvC3 has been so influential, right down to the way the graphics look.

The question begs to be asked: will Marvel’s influence on MvC3 have a positive impact on the franchise? MvC fans are already criticizing the game’s visuals, citing MvC2’s sprites as ‘crisp and clean’ and ‘more attractive in appearance’ than the dark, shady 2.5D visuals seen in MvC3.

As gamers, we must always question what is considered the common good of any franchise sequel. What may look good on paper may not ultimately be the best for the fans in the end.

We tip our hats to Marvel for venturing into uncharted waters . Since Marvel’s influence on MvC2 was minimal at best (beyond character licensing, they had little influence on graphics, gameplay, etc.), seeing how their ideas will mesh with the common good of the franchise will be an interesting one.

While the new look seems to be a dramatic departure from what we’re all familiar with as far as the franchise is concerned, it may end up surprising us all. Hopefully it will.
